In traditional design of omputer based systems some e ort, say 1, is spent on the early modeling phases, and some very high e ort, say 50, is spent on the later implementation and testing phases. It is the onje ture of this paper that the total e ort an be substantially redu ed if an in reased e ort, say 2, is spent on the early modeling phases. Su h a shift in fo us of e orts will also greatly improve the overall e e ts (both quality and ost-wise) of the systems developed, thereby leading to a better (denoted by \ ") design pro ess. In this paper, we spe i ally onsider the design of safetyriti al distributed real-time systems. 1 Introdu tion Designing safetyriti al real-time systems involves assessment of fun tionality, timing and reliability of the designed system. Though several design methods have been proposed in literature (su h as HRT-HOOD, DARTS, UPPAAL, UML-RT), none of them have been able to gain widespread a eptan e due to the range and magnitude of the issues involved and probably due the restri ted fo us of these methods. In Figure 1 we present a generi design model for the development of safety riti al distributed real-time systems.
